Sharpness Test
This test was based off of Hooke’s Law the spring constant, using a deflection gage I used three different thicknesses of string .75mm, 1.5mm, and 4.0mm. By watching the deflection gage with an arm of 24inches and a spring constant of 2.5oz to move the arm one inch, I was able to see how much force it took to cut through the string. I ran five controlled test on each string thickness and averaged the result, then I converted the final result to in,lbs of force.

  1. Chris: Great work and your test design looks great. A consideration: Have you considered to using a medium that actually reflects what will be shot in the field? I have used cow scapulae to some degree of success. Additionally what weight/grain broadheads are using? For elk hunting you may want to consider 125 which is the real standard for elk hunters. I really look forward to your results. Looks like allot of fun.

  2. I have put a lot of thought into using scapulae in the test but to even out the playing field and test every broad head to the same standard I decided against it. In the penetration test I will be shooting every broadhead into a new piece of masonite and I chose the masonite because it has the most uniform construction. where a scapulae is more dense in one section than another every shot could yield a different result. And although my test does not perfectly reflect a real life situation I am only interested in the penetration factor, due to the fact that shot placement is always the #1 factor. Thanks for your comment and taking a look the rest of the test results will be posted soon.

  3. When will we see some final numbers? Great test! Thanks for taking the time!

  4. Could you please add other broad heads to the test such as Rage and Schwacker.? thank you fora

  5. Great Job!!!
Thanks for taking the time and effort in this testing. I hope everyone realizes how much time and dedication it takes to do this type of testing. I have been bow hunting for over 30 years and shot a lot of different broad heads in those 30 years. Your comment "SHOT PLACEMENT IS ALWAYS THE #1 FACTOR" Is right on!!! It is good to know what your choice of broad head is capable of, BUT I havent found a broadhead yet that is not capable of killing a deer, elk, or even moose if the shot is placed behind the front shoulder thru the lungs. Placement is everything!!!! Dont get me wrong, I completely understand why we all want to know which BH gets the best prenitration. #1 - 2 holes are always better than 1 in my opion. One large hole (Rage)gives great blood trials but not any better than a pass thru on a down ward angle from a tree stand which leaves the exit hole close to the bottom of the animals rib cage. #2 - some times, even tho we try not to, we as hunters get a little trigger happy and make a bad call and take a shot we shouldnt have. Lord knows I have made my share bad calls and wish I could take them all back. It usaly results in not finding our game or just sending a wounded animal on its way to be become a meal for your local scavangers. In those cases we can only hope that our choice of broad head will bail us out of our poor judgement call we just made. Which some times it will and some times it wont. If if doesnt, 98% of the time hunters will blame thier equipment. Whether it be our bow or our broad heads, it will never be our fault so it had to be that broad head that I was using. Shot placement is critical!!! And the only way a person can narrow that factor down is practice, practice, pratice!!!
Chris - Agian thanks for taking the time to do this type of testing and I hope you continue on with it as the data that you are collecting is greatly appericated by lots.

  6. I would like to thank you for making your results available to all of us, and for making your results scientific and explicit. Too many people try to test broadheads unscientifically and its ridiculous really... Thank you for creating a quantitative test in which to compare different broadheads, and for taking the time to share it. I have wanted to do this same kind of thing for a while (being that I'm an engineering student as well) but I do not have the resources available. I have a question for you. How did you incorporate cutting diameter into your final PFCD rating? What are the derived units of said PFCD?

  7. black bear hunting(Ursus Arctos bearingianus) is regarded as the famous animal for potential predators. The middle size the adult male is 2,7 meter. Its color is different from hazel to nearly black. The bears take part in the morning and during the night. Throughout your entire day they might be met lounging on rocks, basking in the year sun.
